Bringing home a new baby is exciting, overwhelming, and—let's be honest—a little messy. If you're wondering what an in-home newborn session is really like, you're not alone. One of the most common things I hear from new parents is, "Our house isn't photo-ready!"
Good news: it doesn't have to be.
As an Omaha newborn photographer, my goal isn't to photograph a perfectly clean house. It's to capture the love, connection, and tiny moments that make these first few weeks so unforgettable.
Your Home Is Already the Perfect Location
One of the best parts of an in-home newborn session is that you don't have to pack up a days-old baby and head to a studio. You can stay where you're most comfortable.
When I arrive, I'll take a quick look around for the best natural light. Most sessions only use a few spaces—typically the nursery, your bedroom, or a bright living room. You don't need magazine-worthy decor or spotless countertops. A little tidying in those areas is plenty!
Your Baby Sets the Pace
There's no rush during your session. If your baby needs to eat, we'll pause. Need a diaper change? No problem. Extra cuddles? Absolutely.
Some of my favorite photos happen during those in-between moments—feeding your baby, rocking them to sleep, or simply soaking them in. Those everyday moments are often the ones you'll treasure most years from now.
What If My Baby Won't Sleep?
Believe it or not, your baby doesn't have to sleep for beautiful photos.
Sleepy babies are sweet, but awake babies are just as wonderful. Tiny stretches, curious eyes, little yawns, and those adorable newborn expressions all tell the story of who your baby was during these first few weeks.
Lifestyle newborn photography is about capturing your family naturally—not forcing perfect poses.
Older Siblings Are Welcome to Be Themselves
If you have a toddler, don't stress about getting them to smile perfectly or sit still.
We'll play, laugh, take breaks, and let them be kids. The sweetest sibling photos often happen naturally—a kiss on baby's forehead, a curious peek into the crib, or a spontaneous hug.
Real moments always beat forced smiles.
Relax and Enjoy the Moment
The best thing you can do before your session? Take a deep breath.
You don't need a perfect home, a perfectly sleepy baby, or perfectly behaved kids. You just need to show up as you are.
My job is to guide you through the rest so you can focus on loving on your newest little one.
Because years from now, these photographs won't remind you of whether the laundry was folded—they'll remind you exactly how it felt to hold your baby in those fleeting first days.
