how to prepare for an in-home newborn session
(without doing anything extra)
If you’re preparing for newborn photos and wondering what you need to do to get ready, let me start with this: you don’t need to do anything extra.
As an Omaha newborn photographer who specializes in in-home lifestyle sessions, I design these sessions to meet you exactly where you are — in the middle of newborn life, without added pressure or expectations.
One of the biggest worries parents have is whether their home is “photo-ready.” The truth is, your home doesn’t need to look perfect to be meaningful. I work with natural light and focus on connection, not clutter.
Before your session, all I ever recommend is a quick tidy of the spaces we’ll use most — typically the living room, primary bedroom, and nursery. That’s it. No deep cleaning, no rearranging furniture, no stress.
When it comes to what to wear, comfort always comes first. Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby and your connection as a family. There’s no need for matching outfits — instead, think coordinated and cozy.
For your baby, simple is best. A neutral onesie, a swaddle, or even just bare skin and a diaper can be perfect. I’ll gently guide you if changes are needed during the session.
On the day of your session, the most important thing you can do is respond to your baby’s needs. Feed when they’re hungry. Pause when they need soothing. There’s no rush and no expectation for your baby to behave a certain way.
Some of the most meaningful images come from these in-between moments — feeding, rocking, cuddling, and simply being together.
Your only real “job” during an in-home newborn session is to be present with your baby. I’ll take care of the rest. I’ll guide you gently, offer reassurance, and document the moments as they naturally unfold.
These sessions are about remembering how this season felt — not creating something staged or perfect. And when you look back on these images years from now, you’ll be grateful you let things be just as they were.
